An Analysis of the Application of the “Yang Kills, Yin Hides” Theory in the Treatment of Lung Cancer

  Abstract: Abstract: The malignant proliferation of lung cancer can be attributed to the “uncontrolled movement of the Shao Yang phase fire”; the “transformation of inflammation into cancer,” driven by “intense fire consuming qi,” constitutes its core pathogenesis. Based on the theory of “Yang Slaying Yin and Storing” from the Su Wen: Great Treatise on the Origin of Heaven, and in conjunction with the pathological characteristics of lung cancer—namely, “the lung’s failure to perform its descending and purifying functions, and Yang’s failure to contain Yin”—this paper proposes that the core of treatment lies in restoring the lung’s (Metal) ability to descend and purify, thereby enabling the floating and excessive Yang to be contained, descended, and returned to its proper storage. In clinical practice, the method of “Yang Slaying” should be employed to subdue the raging fire, while “Supporting the Righteous Qi” is used to nourish and replenish the body’s vital energy, and “expelling pathogens” to resolve the congealed “phlegm and blood stasis,” thereby preventing the latent cancerous toxins from “acting recklessly.” Furthermore, the emphasis on the three therapeutic methods—attacking, regulating, and nourishing—should be dynamically adjusted according to the different stages of the disease, forming a stage-specific treatment plan characterized by “directly subduing the raging fire in the early stage, giving equal weight to attacking and tonifying in the middle stage, and nourishing the righteous Qi while gradually reducing the intensity of treatment in the late stage,” thereby achieving the therapeutic goal of “living with the tumor.” This article summarizes clinical experience in the treatment of lung cancer and includes a typical case report; the dynamic changes in imaging findings and tumor markers provide clinical evidence supporting the aforementioned theory.
