Exploration and practice of progressive cases in medical genetics teaching

    Abstract: Medical genetics primarily investigates the mechanisms of genetic diseases and the laws of inheritance, which are characterized by abstract knowledge and strong professional characteristics in the discipline. The main issues faced in traditional teaching are low student engagement, weak ability to solve clinical problems, and insufficient guidance in quality objectives. In response to these issues, the team of teachers has constructed a tiered case library of knowledge-based cases - comprehensive cases - clinical cases. Multiple disciplines relevant knowledge, frontiers of the discipline, innovative thinking, genetic ethics, and professional literacy are integrated into the clinical cases. Gradually enhance clinical reasoning ability, the comprehensive literacy of medical students, and their ability to perform their duties. Based on tiered cases, implement blended teaching with a multidimensional evaluation system to improve students self-learning ability and classroom participation. After three rounds of reform, students have a high overall satisfaction with the course, generally recognize the effects of improving their comprehensive abilities, and the case design and evaluation system need continuous improvement and optimization.
