Abstract: Post-stroke insomnia is a common complication after stroke, which seriously affects patients’ rehabilitation and quality of life, while modern medical treatment has certain limitations. In traditional Chinese medicine, it belongs to the category of insomnia, located in the heart and brain, with the liver as the core. The main pathogenesis is failure of the liver to govern coursing and dispersion, stagnation of liver qi, disharmony between liver and heart, and disturbance of spirit. Based on the theory of Mu Yu Da Zhi, this paper reviews its origin and connotation, discusses the acupuncture thinking for post-stroke insomnia, and establishes the therapeutic principles of soothing the liver, regulating qi, harmonizing liver and heart, and tranquilizing mind. The main acupoints are Taichong (LR3), Ganshu (BL18), Baihui (GV20), Shenmen (HT7) and Anmian (EX-HN22), combined with syndrome differentiation of liver fire transforming from stagnation, disharmony of liver and spleen, and yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity. The acupuncture protocol starting with soothing liver qi and calming spirit conforms to the pathogenesis, and can provide theoretical reference for clinical acupuncture treatment of post-stroke insomnia.
