Abstract: Insomnia refers to a category of diseases characterized by the inability to obtain normal sleep, which significantly impacts patients physical and mental health as well as their quality of life. Currently, Western medical treatments often come with significant adverse reactions and are prone to dependency. Based on the concept of qi flowing smoothly eliminates phlegm, and phlegm resolving brings peace to the mind, this article proposes the use of Banxia Houpu Decoction as a foundation for syndrome differentiation in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of phlegm-qi stagnation type insomnia. It explores the pathogenesis and diagnostic and treatment approaches of this type of insomnia. Modern pharmacological research has confirmed that Banxia Houpu Decoction can improve sleep quality through a multi-target mechanism. Typical case treatments have shown that after patients take modified versions of Banxia Houpu Decoction, their sleep duration is significantly extended, and accompanying clinical symptoms are significantly improved. By promoting qi circulation to dispel depression, descending adverse qi to resolve phlegm, and harmonizing yin and yang, Banxia Houpu Decoction provides a new diagnostic and treatment approach for phlegm-qi stagnation type insomnia. It combines the advantages of both efficacy and safety, making it worthy of clinical promotion.

Key words: Insomnia; Phlegm and Qi stagnation; Promoting Qi circulation and resolving depression; Descending counterflow and resolving phlegm; Banxia Houpo Decoction.
