Abstract: Dental diseases caused by oral bacterial infections, such as cavities and periodontitis, not only threaten oral health but can also induce systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes through the bloodstream, becoming a major global public health issue. The limitations of traditional antimicrobial approaches, such as antibiotic resistance and staining from chlorhexidine, are increasingly evident, highlighting the urgent need to develop new, efficient antimicrobial materials. Metal-polyphenol networks (MPNs), a class of supramolecular materials self-assembled from metal ions and polyphenol ligands, offer biocompatibility, structural tunability, and synergistic antimicrobial activity, showing great potential in inhibiting oral pathogenic bacteria. This article systematically reviews the composition and characteristics of MPNs and the pathogenic mechanisms of oral pathogenic bacteria, focusing on their mechanisms in inhibiting oral bacteria, summarizing their application progress in the treatment and prevention of oral diseases, analyzing current research bottlenecks, and exploring future development directions, providing a reference for the development and clinical translation of MPN-based oral antimicrobial materials.
