Abstract: :Objective To evaluate the clinical efficacy of intestinal metal stent placement combined with the She-ethnic empirical formula Chengqi Decoction (hereinafter referred to as Chengqi Decoction) in patients with malignant bowel obstruction (MBO). Methods Sixty-two in-patients with MBO admitted to Lishui Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine between April 2021 and December 2024 were recruited. They were randomly assigned to a study group (n=31) and a control group (n=31).The control group received intestinal metal stent placement plus standard care, whereas the study group additionally started oral administration of Chengqi Decoction 24 h after stent deployment. Results Symptom improvement: On treatment days 3 and 7, the study group showed significantly better improvement scores than the control group for core symptoms such as abdominal distension/pain, nausea/vomiting, and passage of flatus/stool (P<0.05). Symptom-relief time: The time to relief of abdominal distension/pain and nausea/vomiting, as well as the time to recovery of anal flatus/stool passage, were all shorter in the study group (P<0.05). Functional status and quality of life: Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) and Quality of Life (QOL) scores were significantly higher in the study group (P<0.05). Overall efficacy: The total clinical effective rate was 96.8 % in the study group versus 87.1 % in the control group (P<0.05). Length of stay: In subgroups requiring either palliative care or subsequent radical colectomy, the mean hospital stay was markedly shorter for the study group (P<0.05). Safety: No stent-related complications—such as intestinal perforation, bleeding,or stent migration—were observed in either group during the study period. Conclusion Combining intestinal metal stent placement with the She-ethnic Chengqi Decoction effectively and rapidly alleviates clinical symptoms, improves functional status and quality of life, and shortens hospitalization without compromising safety. This integrated regimen offers a novel and practical approach to the management of MBO.
