Research progress on DNA damage and immune response in autoimmune diseases

  Abstract: Autoimmune diseases are characterized by an aberrant immune tolerance function, whereby the body mounts an immune response against its own antigens, resulting in tissue and organ damage or dysfunction. DNA damage and DNA damage-mediated immune response signaling pathways have garnered significant attention in various autoimmune diseases. When DNA damage is excessive or DNA repair capabilities are impaired, abnormal DNA molecules may be mistakenly identified as foreign antigens, triggering autoimmune inflammatory responses that play a crucial role in the development and progression of diseases. This article provides a comprehensive review of the correlation between DNA damage and its downstream immune response signaling pathways with autoimmune diseases. It elaborates on the mechanisms of immune responses triggered by DNA damage, aiming to provide insights for novel therapeutic targets in autoimmune diseases.
