Abstract: Low back pain is a common and serious health issue in modern society, and it is one of the major causes of disability. Modic type 1 changes (MC1) is closely associated with low back pain and intervertebral disc degeneration, therefore MC1 has drawn wide attention. The study of the etiology and pathogenesis of MC1 will provide new methods for alleviating low back pain and improving intervertebral disc degeneration which has great importance. In recent years, relevant researches have been continuously deepened. The author will review the literature and summarize the etiology and pathogenesis of MC1 from the aspects of low virulent infection, endplate damage, local inflammation and autoimmune reaction. This article will help to provide the target of clinical interventions and direction of future researches related to MC1.
