Abstract: Objective To understand the effects of voluntary social participation and personal social participation on older adults level of depression and to explore the mediating roles of social networks, social adaptation and life satisfaction, so as to provide an empirical basis for promoting older adults mental health and achieving positive aging. Methods Based on a sample of 6939 older adults from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) 2018 national survey data, a one-way analysis was conducted using two independent samples t-test, a multi-factor analysis was conducted using OLS model, and the mediating effect was tested by stepwise regression and GSEM. Results The level of social participation of older adults in China is low. Both voluntary social participation, personal social participation and both types of participation significantly suppress depression levels in older adults. Individual-type social participation suppressed depression by improving their social networks, social adjustment and life satisfaction, while voluntary-type social participation suppressed depression by improving their social adjustment level. Conclusion Social participation reduces depression levels in older adults, and the government and the community should encourage the elderly to participate more in social welfare activities and recreational social activities to improve their social network, social adaptation and life quality, so as to improve their mental health and achieve a sense of worthiness and happiness in old age.
