Abstract: Objective To investigate the effects and interactions of different types of social participation and family support on the mental health of older adults, and to provide a basis for decision making to promote mental health of older adults. Methods 12686 cases of older adults were extracted from the 2018 data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey(CLHLS) to create nationally representative estimates. Based on the descriptive analysis and Pearson correlation test, we analyzed the current mental health status and correlation of older adults with different social participation and family support characteristics. Binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the effects of individual factors, social participation and family support on the positive and negative emotions of the elderly, and to explore the interaction effects between multiple social participation types. Results The incidence ratios of better mental health among older adults with social participation and family support were 5.72%-17.50% higher. Recreational social participation, interactive social participation and living with family had significant promoting effects on older adults mental health, and there was a significant interaction between these two types of social participation. Domestic social participation had a negative effect on mental health. Conclusion There are differences and partial reciprocity in the effects of different types of social participation on older adults mental health, and the increase of family support represented by living style can significantly improve older adults mental health. Older adults should be encouraged to participate more in social activities and live with family members to improve their positive emotions and reduce the risk of negative emotions.
