Abstract: Objective: To observe the effects of acupoint application on exercise tolerance and cardiopulmonary function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) of the lung-kidney qi deficiency type during the stable phase. Methods: Eighty patients with stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) of lung-kidney qi deficiency type were randomly assigned to a control group (n=40) and an observation group (n=40) using a random number table. The control group received symptomatic Western medical interventions including anti-infection, cough suppression, expectoration promotion, and asthma relief. The observation group, in addition to the above-mentioned treatment for the control group, was administered acupoint application therapy: once every other day, with each application lasting 1–2 hours. A treatment course consisted of 7 consecutive applications, and a total of 3 courses were completed. Before treatment and at the end of each course, the 6-minute walking distance (6MWD), percentage of forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV?%), and scores of the modified COPD Efficacy Satisfaction Questionnaire (mESQ-COPD) were assessed and recorded for both groups. The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome scores were evaluated before treatment and after the completion of all treatment courses. Results: After treatment, both groups showed increased 6MWD and FEV1% compared to pre-treatment levels (P <0.05), with the observation group showing higher improvements than the control group (P <0.05). Both groups exhibited reduced mESQ-COPD scores and TCM syndrome scores compared to pre-treatment levels (P <0.05), with the observation group showing lower improvements than the control group (P <0.05). Regarding acute exacerbations, during the entire study period, fewer patients in the observation group experienced acute exacerbations compared to the control group, but the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusion: Acupoint application, as a supplement to pharmacological treatment, can effectively improve exercise tolerance and cardiopulmonary function in patients with stable COPD of lung-kidney qi deficiency type, enhance quality of life, and demonstrate significant therapeutic efficacy. This provides evidence-based medical support for the application of acupoint therapy in treating chronic refractory lung diseases.
