Abstract: It is currently believed that the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis (UC) is mainly related to the damage of the intestinal mucosal barrier, closely related to the impairment of the intestinal mucosal barrier, involving dysbiosis of the gut microbiota, disruption of tight junction structures, damage to intestinal epithelial cells, immune imbalance, and excessive release of pro-inflammatory factors. The Traditional Chinese Medicine theory of spleen being the defensive organ of zang-fu viscera is a highly generalized concept of the physiological functions of the spleen and stomach, emphasizing that its role in maintaining the bodys vital activities and defending against external pathogens. Spleen being the defensive organ of zang-fu viscera is the core of the disease mechanism. The intestinal mucosal barrier functionally corresponds to the theory of spleen being the defensive organ of zang-fu viscera and can be regarded as a concrete manifestation of it. Damage to the intestinal mucosal barrier is similar to spleen losing of guard. The treatment of UC follows the principle of fortifying the spleen and restoring the defend and clearing dampness and heat together with clearing heat and detoxifying, promoting blood circulation to remove blood stasis and yangyinheying, which can repair the damaged intestinal mucosa and improve the intestinal mucosal barrier function, so as to achieve the purpose of treating UC.
