Abstract: Objective: Investigation of effect of the characteristic RS3 resistant starch from banana taro (Ce-RS3) on serum homocysteine (Hcy) level in patients with atherosclerotic cerebral infarction (ACI) during the recovery period. Methods: This study was conducted in the Department of Neurology at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guizhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The subjects were 60 patients in the convalescent phase of cerebral infarction who were admitted between October 2023 and October 2024. They were divided into an observation group and a control group, each comprising 30 patients, using a computer-generated random sequence. Finally, 28 patients in the observation group and 27 patients in the control group completed the study, with a total of 55 participants successfully finishing the trial. The control group was treated with Atorvastatin Calcium and Aspirin, while the observation group was treated with Atorvastatin Calcium, Aspirin, and Ce-RS3. After 12 weeks of treatment, the levels of Hcy in the blood, carotid artery plaque size, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Barthel Index (BI), and changes in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) symptom scores were compared between the two groups. Results: After treatment, the serum Hcy levels decreased and carotid plaque size was reduced in both groups, with the NIHSS scores and TCM syndrome scores also decreased, and the observation group was lower than the control group (p<0.05). After treatment, the BI increased, with the observation group higher than the control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study show that Ce-RS3 has a significant effect on stabilizing atherosclerotic plaques and reducing serum Hcy levels, which is helpful to improve the neurological status and treatment efficacy.
