Abstract: Membranous nephropathy is a chronic glomerular disease with long course, high recurrence rate and poor prognosis. Its pathogenesis is characterized by deficiency of the spleen and kidney as the root cause and stagnation of water-dampness, blood stasis and turbid toxin as the target cause, which is highly compatible with the theoretical connotation of “Retention due to Deficiency Qi”, and therefore it is proposed that “Retention due to Deficiency Qi” is the core pathogenesis for the occurrence and development of membranous nephropathy. Therefore, it is suggested that “Retention due to Deficiency Qi”is the core pathogenesis of membranous nephropathy. The treatment of membranous nephropathy advocates “tonifying deficiency and clearing stagnation of qi”, which focuses on strengthening the spleen and the kidneys, benefiting qi and nourishing yin, clearing away heat and inducing dampness, resolving turbid and detoxifying toxins, as well as invigorating blood circulation to clear the blood vessels. Based on the theory of “Retention due to Deficiency Qi”, this article systematically describes Master Chens understanding of the pathomechanism of membranous nephropathy and his characteristic treatments, with a view to provide reference for the clinical treatment of membranous nephropathy.
