Abstract: [Objective] Put forward suggestions on the layout of medical schools and the regulation of the school scale of medical education. [Methods] Count the number of medical schools in China as of the end of 2021 and their matching degree with the population, and compare it with the population and level of economic and social development of the whole country and regions, and compare it with OECD countries. Analyze the distribution of medical schools at different levels and the medical graduates in different regions and cities. [Results] The total number of medical students in China is moderate, but the level needs to be improved, the average scale of medical schools is too large, the functions of various medical schools need to be optimized as a whole, and the development of traditional and Western medicine is an important feature of China's higher medical education. [Limitations] The discussion on the co-development of higher education of traditional Chinese and Western medicine needs to be deepened. [Conclusions] The distribution of medical schools should be actively and cautiously expanded, while promoting homogeneous training of medical students, and while steadily expanding the overall scale of student, it is necessary to regulate the scale of various medical schools.
