Abstract: Gliomas are the most common primary malignancies of the central nervous system and are associated with extremely poor prognosis, particularly in high-grade gliomas, which are characterized by high recurrence rates and limited efficacy of conventional therapies. Owing to its unique physical and biological properties, carbon ion beams have demonstrated remarkable therapeutic efficacy, reduced normal tissue toxicity, and shorter treatment courses, and are therefore regarded as one of the most promising radiation modalities in 21st-century cancer radiotherapy. This review systematically summarizes the clinical experience, therapeutic outcomes, recent advances, and distinctive advantages of carbon ion radiotherapy in the treatment of gliomas, with the aim of providing a comprehensive reference for clinicians and researchers to better understand its clinical value and future development.

Key words: carbon ion beam; carbon ion radiotherapy(CIRT); radiotherapy; glioma
