Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) is the frontier research field of computer science, and the combination of AI and medicine is the current research trend. The advantages of AI in medical image processing make it become a research hotspot in ophthalmic image diagnosis. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the leading cause of blindness in the working population worldwide. Early and timely diagnosis of DR and maximum preservation of visual acuity of DR patients are the focus of research. At present, a large number of studies have reported that AI has high sensitivity and specificity in DR screening and grading diagnosis, which has a good prospect for clinical application. This paper summarizes the concept and research direction of AI, the current status of DR diagnosis, and the research on the application of AI in DR diagnosis, in order to provide a reference for the future development direction of AI in DR research.
