Research progress on ferroptosis in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis

    Abstract: The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (AS) remains complex and not yet fully elucidated. Ferroptosis, a form of programmed cell death, has emerged as a significant focus in recent AS research. This article systematically reviews the association between atherosclerosis and ferroptosis, discussing the mechanisms by which ferroptosis contributes to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. Through a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature, it explores the interplay between oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, inflammation, gut microbiota, apoptosis, and ferroptosis, as well as their impact on the development and progression of atherosclerosis. By delving into the mechanisms through which ferroptosis influences atherosclerosis, this study offers novel insights and directions for therapeutic interventions targeting atherosclerosis.
