Lateral Cheek Rotation Flap Combined with Z-Plasty for Reconstruction of Postoperative Defect Following Nasal Sidewall Malignant Tumor Resection: A Case Report and Literature Review

  Abstract: Objective To present a case report on the application of a lateral cheek rotation flap combined with Z-plasty for reconstructing a postoperative defect following nasal sidewall malignant tumor resection, and to review the relevant literature to discuss the value of this combined technique. Methods: This combined surgical approach is relatively novel and yielded favorable outcomes. Literature regarding the application of the lateral cheek rotation flap, Z-plasty, and their combination in the reconstruction of nasal and facial defects was reviewed by searching Chinese and English databases (including PubMed, CNKI, and Wanfang). Results: The patients flap survived completely, and the wound healed by primary intention. During the 3-month follow-up period, there was no tumor recurrence. The nasal ala and nasolabial fold exhibited natural symmetry, with no complications such as lower eyelid ectropion or nasal vestibule distortion. The scar was inconspicuous, and the aesthetic outcome was satisfactory. Conclusion: The combination of a lateral cheek rotation flap and Z-plasty is an effective method for reconstructing defects in specific areas such as the nasal ala-nasolabial groove junction. It successfully balances the requirements of radical tumor resection, functional restoration, and aesthetic rehabilitation, proving particularly suitable for complex defects where displacement of adjacent structures must be avoided. This combined procedure offers the advantages of relative technical simplicity, single-stage completion, and reliable outcomes.
