Research Progress on the Relationship between Cystatin C and Ischemic Stroke

    Abstract: Cystatin C is a potent cysteine protease inhibitor that plays a critical role in multiple biological processes. In recent years, a growing body of evidence has demonstrated a close association between CysC and the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for predicting the risk and prognosis of this condition. Nevertheless, the specific mechanism of CysC in ischemic stroke has not been fully elucidated yet, and it may be related to pathways such as vascular endothelial cell homeostasis, inflammatory response, oxidative stress, autophagy and synaptic structure. This review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the potential mechanisms of CysC in ischemic stroke, thereby offering a theoretical foundation for its translational exploration as a novel therapeutic target.
