The Role of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis*

Abstract: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a chronic and disabling joint disease characterized by degenerative changes in articular cartilage, synovial inflammation, subchondral bone sclerosis, and osteophyte formation. Its main manifestations include joint pain, functional impairment, and cartilage destruction. With the global aging population, the incidence of KOA continues to rise, and the efficacy of traditional treatment methods is limited. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), due to their multi-directional differentiation potential, immunomodulatory function, and tissue repair ability, have shown broad prospects in the treatment of KOA. This review systematically expounds the sources, mechanisms of action, clinical research progress, efficacy evaluation, safety issues, and future research directions of MSCs, aiming to provide references for subsequent research and clinical application.
