Analysis of Applications and Approved Projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in a University-Affiliated Hospital in Northwest China, 2014–2025

• 摘要：目的：分析2014-2025年西北地区某高校附属医院国家自然科学基金申报与资助情况，评估科研发展态势，剖析存在的问题为提升科研管理效能和实现高质量发展提供对策建议。方法：收集该医院十二年间国家自然科学基金申请与立项的详细数据，采用描述性统计和卡方检验等方法，从项目类型、学科与科室分布及负责人特征等多个维度进行分析。结果：十二年期间该院立项率达12.9%，申报量持续增长，立项数长期徘徊在20-40项/年。项目类型结构不均，地区基金为主体（立项占比85.2%，立项率13.5%），面上项目（立项率12.7%）突破困难，青年基金立项率仅4.2%。学科与科室分布高度集中在循环系统、肿瘤学等六大优势学科；心血管病中心等少数科室立项占比达40%。作为申报主力的41-50岁中年科研骨干立项率仅10.3%；入职1-3年的青年科研人员具有较高立项潜力（立项率18.39%）。结论：针对当前申报体系中存在的结构性短板，医院将实施科研高质量发展战略。通过强化平台支撑、精准培育青年人才及促进学科交叉融合，实现科研竞争力的质的飞跃，为建设高水平研究型医院奠定坚实基础。

  Abstract: Objective: To analyze the application and funding status of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) at a university-affiliated hospital in Northwest China from 2014 to 2025, evaluate the scientific research development trend, identify existing problems, and provide countermeasures to improve research management efficiency and achieve high-quality development.Methods: Detailed data regarding NSFC applications and approvals over the 12-year period were collected. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were employed to conduct a multi-dimensional analysis covering project types, distribution across disciplines and departments, and characteristics of principal investigators (PIs).Results: During the 12-year period, the overall approval rate of the hospital reached 12.9%. While the number of applications grew continuously, the number of approved projects remained stagnant at 20–40 per year. The structure of funded projects was imbalanced: Regional Funds constituted the mainstay (accounting for 85.2% of total approvals with a 13.5% success rate), while Major Projects proved difficult to secure (success rate 12.7%), and the success rate for Youth Science Funds was only 4.2%. Furthermore, the distribution of projects was highly concentrated in six dominant disciplines, such as the circulatory system and oncology; a few departments, including the Cardiovascular Center, accounted for 40% of the total approvals. Regarding the demographic characteristics of PIs, middle-aged researchers aged 41–50, who served as the main force in applications, had a relatively low approval rate of 10.3%. Conversely, young researchers with 1–3 years of employment demonstrated high potential, achieving an approval rate of 18.39%.Conclusion: Addressing the structural shortcomings identified in the current application system, the hospital will implement a strategy for high-quality scientific research development. By strengthening platform support, precisely cultivating young talent, and promoting interdisciplinary integration, the hospital aims to achieve a qualitative leap in research competitiveness, laying a solid foundation for building a high-level research-oriented hospital.
