Abstract: Functional dyspepsia is a common functional disease of the gastrointestinal tract, which is believed to be caused by spleen deficiency and stagnation of qi, loss of gastric harmony, and imbalance of the elevation of qi in the middle jiao. Wu Jutong, a doctor in the Qing Dynasty, proposed the theory of “treating the middle jiao as balance” as a treatment principle for spleen and stomach diseases. This article discusses the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia from the “middle jiao imbalance”, including the imbalance of elevation and descent, the imbalance of yin and yang, and the imbalance of zang and diarrhea. Banxia Xiexin Decoction regulates qi and restores the physiological functions of the spleen and stomach through the use of pungent, bitter and bitter remedies, the equalization of cold and heat, and the balance between deficiency and solidity, which is in line with the theoretical idea of “treating the middle jiao as balance”. Therefore, this article discusses the pathogenesis of functional dyspepsia based on the theory of “treating the middle jiao as balance” and the mechanism of action of Banxia Xiexin Decoction in treating functional dyspepsia, so as to provide more theoretical basis and ideas for the clinical research and treatment of functional dyspepsia.
